The 79th Cannes Film Festival officially opened on May 12, 2026, with 22 films competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or. The start of the event was marked by industry-wide tension regarding the rapid disruption caused by artificial intelligence and a noted limited presence of major Hollywood studios.
Festival director Thierry Fremaux addressed the ongoing dispute over the role of artificial intelligence in cinema. Fremaux specifically criticized the impact of AI on the workforce, highlighting job losses among translators and dubbing artists as the technology continues to integrate into the industry.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Mistress of Ceremonies Eye Haïdara, a French-Malian actress previously recognized for her role in Le Sens de la fête (C’est la vie!). During her address to the audience, Haïdara stated:
“To all of you who are trying to resist, here and elsewhere. Good evening and welcome!”

The opening film for the 2026 edition is La Vénus électrique (The Electric Kiss), directed by Pierre Salvadori, who also directed En Liberté ! (The Trouble with…). To expand the reach of the festival beyond the Croisette, the opening ceremony was broadcast in more than 950 cinemas across France on May 12, 2026.
Jury and Competition
The Feature Films Jury for the 79th edition is presided over by filmmaker Park Chan-Wook. The jury members tasked with debating and deciding the competition winners include actress Demi Moore and actress Ruth Negga.

Monia Chokri has been named the President of the Caméra d’or Jury for this year’s festival.
Honorary Awards and Classics
The festival awarded an honorary Palme d’Or to director Peter Jackson. Jackson is recognized for his eclectic filmmaking style and his adaptations of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
In the Cannes Classics section, Guillermo del Toro opened the proceedings. The event coincided with the 20th anniversary of his film El laberinto del fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth), featuring the character the Pale Man.
