Case of sexual violence; Sri Lankan cricketer Gunathilaka has been banned from all formats

Sri Lankan cricketer Dhanushka Gunathilaka, who was arrested in a rape case, has been banned with immediate effect from all formats by the Lankan Cricket Board. The star was arrested by Sydney police during the World Cup matches. Sri Lanka were out of the World Cup due to poor performance. After the rape case was filed against Gunathilaka, the team returned home without the star. The Lankan Cricket Board has also announced that it will take action including issuing a fine if found guilty in the case.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Regional Court, while hearing the bail petition filed by Gunathilaka in the case, has denied the actor bail. Gunathilaka’s lawyer said that it has been decided to approach the Supreme Court against the judgment and that the necessary steps will be taken soon.

Gunathilaka was ruled out of the first round of the T20 World Cup due to a hamstring injury. Ashen Bandara was replaced. But Gunathilaka continued with the team in Australia.

Gunathilaka was arrested by the police after arriving at the hotel where the Sri Lankan team was staying. A 29-year-old woman filed a complaint against the actor.

The young woman met Gunathilaka through an online dating app. Then on the night of November 2, 2022, the woman’s complaint says that the actor sexually assaulted her. The police are still investigating the incident.
