Scientists at the University of Sydney have shown that cannabinol (CBN), a compound found in cannabis, can help improve sleep. Their research, published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, demonstrated that CBN increases non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in rats. Human trials are currently ongoing. NREM sleep helps with physical recovery and memory strengthening, while REM sleep is linked to dreaming and emotional processing. This study adds to the anecdotal claims made by cannabis users and could lead to new treatments for sleep disorders like insomnia.

Lead researcher Professor Jonathon Arnold stated that for years, people believed that older cannabis made users sleepy due to CBN. However, there was little scientific proof until now. Arnold noted that the study provides solid evidence that CBN enhances sleep by positively altering sleep patterns in rats.

The team at the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics conducted their research using advanced monitoring techniques. They found that CBN increased both NREM and REM sleep, leading to longer total sleep time. The effect was similar to zolpidem, a well-known sleep medication. Preliminary results from parallel human trials suggest that insomnia patients may also benefit from CBN.

CBN is a byproduct of THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Over time, THC gradually converts to CBN, which is why older cannabis may lead to a sleepier effect. Unlike THC, CBN has a much weaker impact on the brain’s CB1 cannabinoid receptors.

Conventional sleep medications often come with issues regarding effectiveness and side effects. This situation drives many to look for alternative solutions, including cannabis. Experts believe that this study could support the use of medical cannabis in places where it is still prohibited.

Interestingly, highly purified CBN sleep aids are already available in the US, despite the lack of strong scientific backing—until now. This new research provides valuable insights into the potential of CBN as a sleep aid, making it a topic of increasing interest in sleep medicine.
