The cathedral of Notre-Dame du Réal in Embrun, Hautes-Alpes, has been highlighted as one of the most distinctive religious monuments in the French Alps, according to a report by actu.fr. Located in the town of Embrun, the structure, the largest in the region, boasts 800 years of history and is noted for its Lombard-inspired architecture, characterized by the alternating use of black schist and white limestone.
Classified as a Historic Monument, the cathedral was constructed between 1170 and 1225, contemporary with Notre-Dame de Paris. It is situated along the pilgrimage route of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle and has historically been linked to over 200 recorded miracles between the 14th and 15th centuries. The north façade features the renowned “porche du Réal,” adorned with lions and atlantes supporting columns, and a tympanum once decorated with a “miraculous” fresco depicting the Three Kings, which contributed to the cathedral’s name and its association with the “Vierge du Réal.”
The interior of the cathedral blends Romanesque and Gothic elements, with a notable organ dating to the late 15th century, gifted by King Louis XI. This organ, one of the oldest in France, has undergone multiple restorations and now features thousands of pipes and a richly decorated case designated as a Historic Monument. The chapel of Sainte-Anne houses one of France’s most extensive liturgical collections, including nearly 500 objects from the 15th to 19th centuries, such as gold-embroidered vestments, silver chalices, and a gilded reliquary believed to contain a fragment of the True Cross.

Regular guided tours and cultural events, including the Festival de l’heure de l’orgue during the summer, emphasize the cathedral’s historical and artistic significance. External performances, such as the “Nuit des cathédrales” and “Journées européennes du patrimoine,” further highlight its role in local heritage.
With its medieval craftsmanship and spiritual legacy, the Notre-Dame du Réal cathedral continues to draw visitors eager to experience its centuries-old artistry and historical narratives.
