Utah Man Arrested in Connection to Charlie Kirk Shooting
SALT LAKE CITY – A suspect is in custody following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Utah officials announced Friday. Tyler Robinson, 22, a Utah native, has been identified as the individual who allegedly shot and killed Kirk on Wednesday.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we got him,” Gov. Spencer Cox declared at a press conference.
Robinson has been booked into the Utah County jail and faces charges of felony discharge of a firearm, aggravated murder, and obstruction of justice. Charging documents are expected to be filed early next week.
Gov. Cox expressed gratitude to Robinson’s family members for their cooperation. “I want to thank the family members of Tyler Robinson who did the right thing in this case and were able to bring him in to law enforcement,” he said.
A family friend contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday night, relaying that Robinson had confessed or implied his involvement in Kirk’s death.
Investigators learned from a family member that Robinson had “become more political in recent years.” The family member recounted an incident where Robinson expressed his dislike for Kirk and his viewpoints during a dinner conversation.
The FBI is assisting with the inquiry. Forensic evidence has been seized and is being evaluated at FBI laboratories in Quantico. According to FBI Director Kash Patel, over 11,000 leads were called in.
