Portions of the Chicago area experienced air quality levels classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups” on Friday morning, as stagnant air and dense fog trapped pollutants near the surface. Data from AirNow.gov indicated that air quality reached level three of six in parts of Cook and DuPage counties, affecting communities including Tinley Park, Elmhurst, Downers Grove, York, Oak Lawn, Frankfort, and Chicago Heights.
Atmospheric Stagnation and Fog Impacts
The diminished air quality is not the result of ozone buildup, according to NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Iisha Scott. Instead, the conditions are primarily attributed to stagnant air masses that have remained parked over the region for several days, preventing the dispersal of smoke, dust, and industrial emissions. Light winds have further hindered the atmosphere’s ability to cleanse these accumulated pollutants.
The National Weather Service notes that such stagnation events occur when an air mass remains stationary, allowing for a significant buildup of particles. This environmental challenge is compounded by a dense fog advisory that was in effect for parts of the Chicago area until 9 a.m. Friday. The advisory, which included Lake County in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin, warned of visibility dropping to one-quarter mile or less, particularly near the Wisconsin state line.
Weekend Weather Outlook
While the immediate air quality concerns persist, the meteorological outlook for the Chicago area shifts toward milder conditions for the remainder of the weekend. Forecasts indicate sunny skies with temperatures reaching into the low 70s, though conditions will remain cooler near the lakefront.
Scott stated that the current moderate air quality levels are expected to persist throughout the weekend. Individuals with sensitivities to atmospheric pollutants are advised to monitor local air quality reports as the stagnant pattern continues. Looking ahead, temperatures are projected to decline to the low-to-mid 60s by Monday, with the cooler trend likely to hold through the remainder of the week and into the Halloween holiday, accompanied by a potential for rain by midweek.
Just a heads up, if you do have maybe a sensitivity to pollutants in the atmosphere.
