Hamilton, New Zealand – Thirty years after its inaugural match, the legacy of the Waikato Chiefs’ entry into the Super 12 (now Super Rugby Pacific) remains a point of pride for those involved in the franchise’s formative years. While the modern game has evolved dramatically, the foundation laid in 1996 continues to resonate as the team prepares to host the Crusaders on February 28th.

The Chiefs kicked off their Super 12 journey with a narrow 27-26 victory over the Canterbury Crusaders at Rugby Park in Hamilton on March 3rd, 1996. It was a match remembered for its intensity and the palpable excitement surrounding the new competition. “It was probably the quickest 80 minutes we ever played,” recalled Richard Turner, the Chiefs’ captain that season. “There was such an anticipation, it felt like [the match] was over so quickly.”

That first season wasn’t without its challenges. The Chiefs finished sixth out of 12 teams, failing to reach the playoffs. Despite this, Turner maintains a positive outlook on the team’s initial foray into professional rugby. “We underachieved ” he admitted, “but I’d still call his team’s first season a success.”

The 1996 Super 12 represented a significant shift in the landscape of rugby. Turner emphasized the nascent state of professionalism at the time. “Rugby was in its infancy in terms of professionalism. Everything we did was new. We were the guinea pigs – there was not much of a manual. We forged our own path in a way.” The demands on players increased exponentially, transitioning from two or three training sessions per week to a full-time commitment. “Diet and recovery became a big part… It was a lifestyle change for a lot of guys.”

One of the unique hurdles faced by the Chiefs in their inaugural season was unifying players from traditionally rival provincial teams. The franchise drew players from Northland, North Harbour, Thames Valley, King Country, Bay of Plenty, and Waikato. “Bringing together provinces that were, in some cases, fierce rivals, especially the fans [was challenging],” Turner explained. “It did take a bit to get used to [the fact] that the cowbells were supporting us. Up until then, for some of us [not from Waikato], if you played well enough, you silenced the cowbells.”

Despite the challenges, a sense of collective identity began to emerge. Turner, now based in Auckland, remains a staunch supporter of the Chiefs. “Once a Chief, always a Chief,” he affirmed. He plans to attend the upcoming match against the Crusaders at FMG Stadium Waikato, eager to witness the evolution of the game.

The modern game, Turner observes, is a world apart from the one he experienced in 1996. “The game has advanced so much. [The players] are better, stronger, faster.” However, he is confident in the current Chiefs squad’s ability to secure a victory, even predicting a more decisive win than the original 1996 encounter.

Current Chiefs captain Luke Jacobson shares that confidence. “We train and prepared well this week to get the win, whether it’s by two points… Or 30 points, we will be stoked,” he said. While acknowledging the significance of the 30th anniversary, Jacobson emphasized that the team’s primary focus remains on performance. “It’s a cool privilege to be able to… go out and play a game that was played similarly 30 years ago but at the same time… whether it happened 30 years ago or not, we wanna be able to put ourselves in the best position to win this.”

Jacobson acknowledged the debt owed to the pioneers of the 1996 team, recognizing them as the foundation upon which the current squad stands. However, when asked about a hypothetical matchup between the two teams, he was unequivocal. “I’d like to think that we’d beat them. The way we work out now, the way that data analysis has come along… it’s the resources that we have available that makes us into better athletes. But that’s to no discredit of the 1996 team. If they had the resources we have now, I’d say that’d be a different story.”

Turner concurred with Jacobson’s assessment, stating, “I think based simply on modern professional evolution, the current squad would win. But the ’96 team would give them a run for their money in certain areas and positions.”

As the Chiefs prepare to face the Crusaders, the echoes of that first match in 1996 serve as a reminder of the franchise’s humble beginnings and the enduring spirit of Waikato rugby. The game, scheduled for February 28th at 7:05 pm at Rugby Park, promises to be a celebration of the past and a showcase of the present, with both teams vying for a victory that carries both competitive and historical weight.
