A photo exhibition titled “Colorful Morocco” opened in Chengdu, China, on November 19, 2024. This exhibition showcases the vibrant colors of Moroccan cities and features 55 photographs taken by six Chinese photographers. The photographers, including Wang Qi, the founder of Daki Art Gallery, traveled to Morocco in 2023.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Chinese Embassy in Rabat, the Chinese Cultural Center in Rabat, and the Chinese Overseas Development Association. It includes five categories: “White Casablanca,” “Red Marrakesh,” “Blue Chefchaouen,” “Blue Chefchaouen Old Phase,” and “Warzajet.”

Visitors can enjoy videos showing the red alleys of Marrakesh’s Old Medina and the beauty of the Majorelle Gardens. They can also see scenes from Jemaa el Fna square, featuring storytellers, musicians, and snake charmers. Photographs of Ouarzazate highlight the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, blending with the surroundings.

The exhibit continues until December 30, guiding visitors through Fez, where they can explore tanneries and artisan shops. It also highlights the blue shades of Chefchaouen and the coastal elegance of Casablanca, including the Hassan II Mosque.

The event attracted many art and culture lovers, sparking discussions about the richness of Moroccan civilization. Abdelkader Al-Ansari, Morocco’s ambassador to China, praised the exhibition. He noted the cultural ties between Morocco and China, emphasizing the importance of art in strengthening their relationship.

Interview with Wang Qi, Founder of Daki Art Gallery and Photographer of “Colorful Morocco” Exhibition

Date: November 20, 2024

Interviewer: Thank you, Wang Qi, for taking the time to speak with us about the “Colorful Morocco” exhibition. Can you tell us what inspired this project?

Wang Qi: Thank you for having me. The inspiration for “Colorful Morocco” came from my fascination with the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of Morocco. During our trip in 2023, the rich colors of cities like Chefchaouen and Marrakesh captivated us. We aimed to capture not just the beauty but also the character and spirit of these places through our photography.

Interviewer: The exhibition features five distinct categories. Can you elaborate on these categories and what they represent?

Wang Qi: Absolutely. The categories are designed to showcase Morocco’s diverse cultural heritage. “White Casablanca” reflects the coastal elegance and modernity of the city, while “Red Marrakesh” captures the bustling life and vibrant streets of the medina. “Blue Chefchaouen” and “Blue Chefchaouen Old Phase” highlight the ethereal beauty of the blue-washed buildings that have become iconic. “Warzajet” aims to bring attention to Ouarzazate’s historical significance, particularly the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, which symbolizes Morocco’s rich history and stunning geography.

Interviewer: The exhibition also includes videos showcasing daily life in Marrakesh. How do you believe these multimedia elements enhance the visitor experience?

Wang Qi: Videos provide a dynamic and immersive experience that photographs alone cannot offer. By showcasing the lively atmosphere of Jemaa el Fna square—complete with storytellers and musicians—we transport visitors beyond static images into the heart of Moroccan culture. This adds depth to our exhibition and encourages greater appreciation for the artistic and cultural narratives we are sharing.

Interviewer: You mentioned the collaboration with the Chinese Embassy in Rabat and other organizations. How essential is cultural exchange in this context?

Wang Qi: Cultural exchange is crucial in building mutual understanding. Through exhibitions like this, we can not only showcase Moroccan culture to a Chinese audience but also strengthen the bonds between our nations. Artistic traditions and sharing different perspectives enrich both cultures, paving the way for deeper connections.

Interviewer: Ambassador Abdelkader Al-Ansari praised the exhibition and its role in fostering cultural ties. How do you see art influencing international relations?

Wang Qi: Art is a universal language that transcends barriers. It fosters dialogue and understanding among different cultures. The fact that high-profile figures like Ambassador Al-Ansari support such initiatives highlights the importance of art in diplomacy. It opens the doors for collaboration and partnership, reminding us of our shared humanity.

Interviewer: Following this exhibition, a symposium titled “Brilliant Morocco” will take place. What can attendees expect from this event?

Wang Qi: The symposium will delve into the various elements that shape Moroccan identity, including Amazigh, Arab, African, and Mediterranean influences. Attendees can expect insightful discussions that expand upon the themes explored in the exhibition, encouraging a dialogue about cultural identity and heritage.

Interviewer: what are your hopes for the cultural exchanges between China and Morocco in the future?

Wang Qi: I hope that initiatives like “Colorful Morocco” will inspire future collaborations and exchanges. As we continue to share our respective cultures, we enrich our societies and promote a better understanding of each other’s history and traditions. This exhibition is just the beginning, and I’m optimistic about what’s to come.

Interviewer: Thank you, Wang Qi, for sharing your insights. We look forward to experiencing “Colorful Morocco” and its cultural impact.

Wang Qi: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this project. I hope everyone enjoys the exhibition!

Wang Cui, the exhibition’s founder, expressed hope for increased cultural exchange between the two nations. He mentioned the unique heritage and geography of Morocco.

On the day after the exhibition, a symposium titled “Brilliant Morocco” is scheduled. This event will cover the Amazigh, Arab, African, and Mediterranean elements that shape Moroccan identity.

Chengdu, where the exhibition is held, is a significant cultural and technological hub in western China, with a population of around 16 million people.
