[마이데일리 = 심재희 기자] Chinese football has once again experienced ‘shame’. It did not make it to Asia’s top 10 in the FIFA rankings. They clearly felt that they were in the ‘third class in Asia’, being pushed out not only by Korea, Japan, Iran, and Australia, but also by countries in the Middle East.

China was ranked 88th in the FIFA rankings published by FIFA on the 5th (Korea time). I stood in the same place as in the last presentation. It was ranked 13th among Asian countries. In the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qatar Asian Cup, they lost face by falling behind runners-up Jordan (71st), Oman (77th), and Bahrain (80th).

China hosted two international matches in March. The 3rd and 4th Group C matches of the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup North and Central America Asia Region took place against Singapore. They ended with a 2-2 away draw on March 21st, and won 4-1 at home on March 26th. They were unable to secure back-to-back wins against Singapore, ranked 155th in the FIFA rankings, and added just 1.44 ranking points.

The position has been falling steadily over the past year, but it has fallen sharply this year. It rose from 81 in April last year to 79 in June last year. It held 79th to 80th place, but fell to 88th in February this year. In the Qatar Asian Cup 2023, they were eliminated in the group stage and lost many ranking points. Even with this announcement, it remained in 88th place and failed to lay the groundwork for a revival.
