Despite having one of the lowest obesity rates among developed nations, China has become a prominent hub for testing new weight loss drugs. Clinical research association Novotech reports that China ranks second globally in the number of obesity trials, trailing only the United States and surpassing Australia.
While only about 6% of Chinese citizens are classified as obese, compared to 31% of Australians and 40% of Americans, China’s massive population of nearly 1.4 billion people presents a significant market for obesity drug trials and treatments. The increasing rates of overweight individuals further contribute to this demand.
shipra Patel, global head of endocrinology at Parexel, noted the growing need for obesity treatments in China. “What is interesting is that, even though the rate of obesity in China is not that high, compared to other countries, I think within China itself, [the rate of] overweight and obesity continues to rise,” Patel said. “So, they do represent a sizable market for patients with obesity.”
What’s next
Pharmaceutical companies are expected to continue focusing on China for obesity drug growth, given the large potential patient base and rising rates of overweight individuals. Further research and clinical trials will likely expand in the region.
