China’s Domestic Trips Surge During New Year Holiday, Official Data Shows

[北京 2日 ロイター] – According to official data released on the 2nd, the number of domestic trips in China during the three-day New Year holiday increased 155% from the previous year to 135 million. Domestic tourism revenue increased to 79.73 billion yuan ($11.23 billion).

According to Ministry of Transport data reported by state media, the number of trips using China’s transport network was 128 million, an increase of 78.4% from the previous year. Compared to 2022, this was an increase of 33.1%.

According to the Global Times, a newspaper linked to the Chinese Communist Party, the number of train journeys taken increased by 177.5% from the previous year, and the number of air journeys increased by 140.3%.

Despite the cold weather in many parts of the country, people attended many music festivals and concerts, and went out with their families more often.

According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, northern provinces such as Heilongjiang have taken advantage of the winter cold to promote ice and snow tourism, extending the operating hours of major tourist attractions, subways and buses.

Xinhua News Agency, citing data from the Ministry of Transport, said the number of air travel between December 30 and January 1 is expected to reach 5.19 million, an increase of 140.3% from the previous year. Highway and shipping use are expected to increase by 46.1% and 72.9%, respectively.
