Chinese Synchronized Swimming Team Prepares for Fukuoka World Championships

Adapting to Rule Changes to Meet the Challenge of the Competition

In a display of synchronized grace and skill, the Chinese Synchronized Swimming Team showcased their talent in a simulated competition at the Training Bureau of the General Administration of Sports in Beijing. With rhythmic music providing the backdrop, the team members executed a series of brilliant moves, eliciting cheers and applause from their teammates and pool coaches.

The mock competition, held on July 3, served as a crucial test for the team’s training results and their ability to adapt to the upcoming Fukuoka World Championships. Zhao Jian, deputy director of the Swimming Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sports of China, emphasized the significance of this event in improving the team’s competitive prowess.

The team members performed four sets of movements during the mock competition, all of which will feature in the Fukuoka World Championships. Notably, two sets, namely joint free choice and double free choice, have never been showcased in international competitions before.

Last October, the World Swimming Federation implemented rule changes for synchronized swimming events, imposing stricter requirements for movement difficulty and choreography. Recently, the federation revised the rules once again, introducing formation changes as a bonus aspect. Zhang Xiaohuan, head coach of the Chinese Synchronized Swimming Team, highlighted the need for the team to comprehend these rule changes promptly and adjust their program difficulty movements accordingly to match their opponents. Balancing difficulty and stability places a premium on the team’s quick response capabilities.

Adapting to these new rules and rising to the challenges posed by the competition calls for extensive and arduous practice. Since the start of this year, the Chinese Synchronized Swimming Team has participated in various World Cup sub-stations and the Super Finals with different lineups and athletes, honing their skills while observing their rivals in the process. As the World Championships draw near, the team’s training intensity has intensified, at times exceeding 10 hours a day.

Wang Liuyi, an accomplished athlete who clinched two gold medals with her younger sister Wang Qianyi in the double event during the previous World Championships, remains steadfast in her pursuit of progress. Fuelled by their rigorous training, Wang Liuyi expressed her aspirations to deliver challenging and artful performances that would leave a lasting impression on the audience and judges at this year’s World Championships.

The eagerly anticipated 2023 World Swimming Championships are scheduled to take place in Fukuoka, Japan from July 14 to 30. The synchronized swimming event, in particular, will run from July 14 to 22, and the competition promises to produce eleven gold medals.

In October last year, the World Swimming Federation adjusted the scoring rules for synchronized swimming events, introducing higher requirements for the difficulty of movements and choreography. A few days ago, the World Swimming Federation revised the rules again, including a formation change as a bonus item. Zhang Xiaohuan, the head coach of the Chinese Synchronized Swimming Team, said that the team should not only “understand” the changes in the rules at the first time, but also adjust their program difficulty movements according to the opponent’s difficulty. Maintaining difficulty and fighting for stability, this tests the quick response ability of everyone in the team.

In order to adapt to the new rules and meet the challenges of the competition, the team members can only practice hard. Since the beginning of this year, the Chinese Synchronized Swimming Team has sent different lineups and athletes to participate in the three World Cup sub-stations and the Super Finals, polishing their moves and observing their opponents in the competition. As the World Championships approach, the team’s training intensity also increases, and sometimes the training time in a day exceeds 10 hours.

Athlete Wang Liuyi won two double event gold medals with her younger sister Wang Qianyi at the last World Championships. She is also the Chinese team champion in the team event. The recent hard training has added momentum to her progress. Wang Liuyi said: “I hope to present difficult and artistic performances in this World Championships, and show the best works to the audience and judges.”

The 2023 World Swimming Championships will be held in Fukuoka, Japan from July 14th to 30. The synchronized swimming event will be held from July 14th to 22nd, and 11 gold medals will be produced.
