Chip to detect cancer; Recognition for Saudi women

King Abdullah University of Science Assistant Professor Dana Al Sulaiman has won an international award for his discovery of a chip to detect different types of cancer in humans. Dana won the Innovators Under-35 Award.

Dana developed the new technology from the realization that traditional methods of collecting body fluids for cancer screening are causing a lot of difficulties for patients. Dana said the chips, which contain small needles she had developed, could be used to collect body fluids and test for cancer. Dana is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Bioengineering at KAUST, a private university in Saudi Arabia.

Dana said her chip has received an American patent and hopes to distribute the chip to hospitals in the future. The Innovators Under-35 Award is given to experts in the field of science and technology under the age of 35.
