Chromium Supplements: Benefits, Risks, and who Should Consider Them
Updated June 01, 2025
Unless specifically advised by a doctor, most peopel don’t need chromium supplements. A varied and healthy diet typically provides sufficient chromium, according to Torey Armul, a registered dietician based in Ohio. Many multivitamins also include chromium.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that the evidence supporting claims that chromium aids in weight loss or helps manage diabetes is limited.
Chromium and Diabetes Management
Some research suggests chromium supplements might help manage diabetes. A meta-analysis indicated chromium was the most effective nutrient for reducing fasting blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients, though the link wasn’t definitive.Another study linked low chromium levels in men to a higher likelihood of diabetes, suggesting potential benefits from supplementation, but emphasized the need for further research.
Kristi King, a registered dietician at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, noted that studies showing benefits from chromium recommend its use alongside traditional diabetes management practices, not as a replacement.
“It should be noted that studies that have shown chromium to be beneficial have recommended that it be used in conjunction with traditional diabetes management practices,” said King.
Though, the american Diabetes Association stated in 2024 that there isn’t enough evidence to support routine chromium use for improving glycemic control in people with diabetes.
Chromium and polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
The effects of chromium on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) symptoms are mixed. A meta-analysis of several trials indicated that chromium could improve insulin resistance and testosterone levels in women with PCOS. Though, the review found no benefit for other symptoms like high cholesterol or hormone levels.Researchers emphasize the need for more high-quality studies to confirm these findings regarding chromium supplements and PCOS.
What’s next
Further research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of chromium supplementation, especially regarding diabetes management and PCOS symptom relief. Consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.
