Cinematographer Venu’s Response to Criticism of Mohanlal by Director Ranjith

It may have been a criticism, but it was an unnecessary statement made against Mohanlal; against Ranjith

Venu is one of the senior cinematographers of Malayalam. In 1983, Venu, an independent cinematographer, has shot more than 50 films in six languages and directed four films in his 40-year career.

He has collaborated with directors like Padmarajan, KG George and Bharathan in several films. Venu responded to director Ranjith’s recent comment on Mohanlal, ‘Criticism is definitely necessary. All audiences have the right to criticize. But Ranjith’s actions cannot be called criticism. It’s just an unnecessary statement. “Ranjith said something that is not relevant,” said Venu.

Director Ranjith had said that Mohanlal’s handling of the Thrissur language in the movie Thuvanathumbikal was bad. He should have responded to this

‘The hardest thing is when working in big films. It is very challenging. Rajiv Menon’s Minsarakanav was the first film I worked on. The light set for the song ‘Vennilave’ was very challenging for me then,’ replied Venu when asked about the most difficult work he had done.

Venu won the National Award in 1986 for his cinematography in the films Amma Vishma and Nanu Parkan Vrinthoppus. Pulimada, directed by AK Sajan, was Venu’s latest film.
