Coldplay Drummer Will Champion Discusses AI, Sustainability, and teh Importance of Live Music
Coldplay drummer Will Champion spoke with Northeastern students at london’s Devon House on October 9, 2025, as part of a new series called Intersections. The event was chaired by Diane MacGillivray, senior vice president for university advancement, and Calypso Newman,a Northeastern graduate and founder of Rock Badger.
Champion discussed Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres tour and its commitment to environmental sustainability. The tour, the most-attended tour of all time with 13 million tickets sold, has reduced emissions by 59% compared to Coldplay’s previous tours. Initiatives include allowing fans to generate renewable energy for the shows, reusable wristbands, and a car-sharing app.
He also explained that the band’s focus on live experiences stems from the challenges of breaking through the noise of algorithm-driven streaming platforms. Champion noted how easy it is to discover music now, but arduous to achieve lasting impact. He contrasted the current music landscape with the 16-week reign of Bryan Adams’ “(Everything I Do) I Do It For you” at the top of the U.K.singles chart in 1991,highlighting how quickly music now “disappears.”
Champion emphasized that creating lasting memories through live shows – real people connecting with each other – is something irreplaceable and a commitment to something meaningful. He believes touring has become crucial for Coldplay to forge these connections, as it’s harder to achieve the same depth of engagement through digital platforms.
