QUITO, Ecuador – Actress and influencer Elba gonzález stars in ‘The Club of Liars,’ a new theatrical comedy now playing in Quito.
A Mural, a Lie, and a Theatrical Premise
The play opens with a frustrated artist named Javier discovering a mural on his house wall one morning in 1931.The artwork, the creation of an anonymous but famous artist, sparks an idea in Javier: He decides to claim it as his own.
This is the starting point for ‘The Club of Liars,’ a comedy now showing at the CCI Theater in Quito.
Inspiration from a Real-Life Banksy Scenario
Daniel Enriquez, the play’s screenwriter and director, said the idea originated two years ago after reading a news story about Colombian journalist Carlos Serrano, who discovered a mural by the elusive street artist Banksy in his London garden in 2024.
Enriquez wondered, “What would have happened if that man had attributed Banksy’s work [to himself]? Because it could perfectly happen… nobody knows who it is.”
From Single Showing to Extended Run
After an initial performance last year, the positive audience response encouraged Enriquez to extend the play’s run.
“A work always grows with the audience, from the functions. It is taking [on] personality,” Enriquez said.”When the prospect was presented to resume it, it was ideal, because I wanted to give it space to evolve.”
deception as a Central Theme
Holding a Hoax
Enriquez said his intention was to create a comedy based on a situation ripe for misunderstandings, but also to explore the nature of deception itself.
“Javier, the protagonist, does not attribute the mural by a misunderstanding. He does it on purpose,” Enriquez explained. “I wanted to talk about how a lie can be sustained and backed. It is indeed a controversial issue, but we have even seen governments maintain fables until the last consequences, and I wanted to play with that idea.”
Cast of Characters
The play stars Elba González as Javier, alongside Nexar Gómez as Zefir, the mural painter; Orlando Herrera; and Erika Russo. The latter two play Claudia and the Countess, characters who aid in perpetuating the deception.
“Everyone here are impostors. No one is innocent and everyone wants a piece of the cake, so you don’t know who to trust,” Enriquez said.
the story shifts between past and present, blending comedy and thriller elements. Enriquez reports that audiences have responded well, connecting with the story immediately.
A Non-Linear Narrative
A risky Format
One notable aspect of the play is its temporality. the action takes place between 1931 and 1933,and the story begins at the end.
“It is not a linear work, because lies are not,” Enriquez said. “The story starts with one of the characters wholly unconscious, and with the public in suspense, without knowing if it is alive or dead. From there, it goes back in time to reveal how deception began.”
Showtimes and Ticket Information
‘The Club of Liars’ is scheduled to run until May 11. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. Tickets are $23.
Following its run in Quito,a national tour is planned. “They are asking us for the work in Riobamba, Santo Domingo and Guayaquil, so we are coordinating dates,” Enriquez said.
