UNM Student’s Comic Explores the Quirks of College Life
Albuquerque, NM – Leila Chapa, a University of New Mexico student, is using her artistic talents to capture the unique experiences of college life in her new comic strip, “comic.”
Chapa’s illustrations, characterized by a vibrant color palette and relatable characters, offer a humorous and insightful look at the everyday struggles and triumphs of being a student. From navigating the labyrinthine campus to the joys (and occasional horrors) of dorm life, “Comic” resonates with readers who have walked the halls of academia.”I wanted to create something that felt authentic to the UNM experience,” Chapa said. “College is a time of immense growth and change, and I think it’s important to find humor in the chaos.”
Chapa’s comic has quickly gained a following on campus, with students sharing panels on social media and eagerly awaiting new installments. Her work has been praised for its wit, honesty, and ability to connect with readers on a personal level.”Leila’s comic is so spot-on,” said UNM sophomore Sarah Martinez. ”It’s like she’s reading my mind! I can totally relate to her characters and their experiences.”
“Comic” is published weekly in The Daily Lobo, UNM’s student newspaper.

Leila Chapa: Thank you! I wanted to capture the UNM experience in a way that felt authentic and relatable. College is a wild ride of ups and downs, and I think humor is the best way to navigate it.

Leila Chapa: I love working with color! It helps bring the characters and their emotions to life. I usually start with a rough sketch, then add color digitally.It’s a pretty organic process.
NewsDirectory3.com: “Comic” tackles a lot of relatable college experiences – dorm life, academic struggles, navigating campus. Which theme has been most rewarding to explore?
Leila Chapa: I think the themes of friendship and community have been the most meaningful. College can be isolating at times, but it’s also a time when you form strong bonds with people who understand what you’re going through.
