‘Completely baseless’: Congress rejects report that Sonia Gandhi may resign

New Delhi: The Congress has denied reports that Sonia Gandhi will step down as Congress president following her pathetic defeat in the Assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh. Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted that the news was completely baseless.

It was reported that Sonia Gandhi may announce her resignation at the Congress Working Committee meeting on Sunday. It has been reported that Priyanka Gandhi may resign as AICC general secretary.

Rahul Gandhi resigned from the Congress presidency following the poor performance of the Congress in the 2019 general elections. Sonia Gandhi has been the interim president ever since. The party has not yet found a permanent president.

The working committee will meet at the AICC headquarters on Sunday at 4 pm to discuss the major defeat in the Assembly elections. At the meeting, the general secretaries in charge of the states will explain the reasons for the defeat. It is learned that G23 leaders may raise the issue of change of leadership at the meeting. The leaders also decided to take a hard line against AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, who is in charge of the organization, citing the defeat in Punjab.
