Russian invasion of Ukraine bombards mosque where 80 people took refuge in Mariupol

The Ukrainian government said on the 12th (local time) that Russian troops attacked a mosque where about 80 civilians had been evacuated in southern Mariupol.

According to the AP and AFP news agency, Ukraine’s foreign ministry said, “Russian forces have bombed the Mosque of Sultan Suleiman I and his wife Herem Sultan in Mariupol. was hiding from the attack.”

However, there was no mention of the specific time of the attack or the number of casualties.

Earlier, the Ukrainian embassy in Turkey said the group included 86 Turkish nationals, including 34 children.

Mariupol has been under fire for more than ten days and is surrounded by Russian forces.

Deputy Mayor Serhii Orlov of Mariupol said the day before, “More than 200,000 people are waiting to be evacuated, but so far all efforts to set up a humanitarian channel for the evacuation of civilians have failed.”

Deputy Mayor Orlov added: “Even trucks loaded with humanitarian aid such as drinking water, food and medicine cannot enter the city.”

In Mariupol, at least 1,582 civilians were killed as a result of Russian siege and shelling, the city council said the day before.
