The grief and shock surrounding the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, continue to reverberate through Hollywood, with comedian Conan O’Brien now publicly sharing his profound sadness and disbelief. O’Brien, who hosted a holiday party attended by the Reiners just hours before their deaths on December 14, 2025, described being “in shock for quite a while afterward.”

Speaking on “The New Yorker Radio Hour” podcast, O’Brien recounted the surreal experience of saying goodnight to the couple, only to learn of their tragic fate the following day. “To have that experience of saying good night to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone… I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just very—it’s so awful. It’s just so awful,” he said. The interview, published February 20, 2026, marks O’Brien’s first public comments since the tragedy.

The Reiners’ deaths, ultimately ruled a double homicide, have been attributed to their son, Nick Reiner, who was arrested the night of December 14th and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Reports following the incident detailed a tense exchange between Nick and his parents at O’Brien’s party, with sources describing a “loud verbal exchange.”

O’Brien emphasized the depth of his friendship with the couple, noting that he and his wife, Liza Powel O’Brien, had grown increasingly close to Rob and Michele in recent years. “I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot. My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so—they were just such lovely people,” he shared with The New Yorker.

Beyond their personal warmth, O’Brien spoke of his admiration for Rob Reiner’s creative output and his passionate engagement with political and social issues. Reiner, a celebrated director known for iconic films like “When Harry Met Sally…” and “The Princess Bride,” was also a vocal advocate for progressive causes, a prominent Democratic donor, and a frequent critic of former President Trump. “I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there—and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien highlighted Reiner’s prolific filmmaking career, marveling at his ability to direct a string of successful movies within a relatively short timeframe. “To make seven—in, like, a nine-year, 10-year, 11-year period—is insanity,” he remarked. He specifically cited “Here’s Spinal Tap,” Reiner’s groundbreaking mockumentary, as a particularly influential work. “With ‘Spinal Tap’ alone, if that’d been the only thing he ever did, he influenced my generation enormously.” O’Brien recalled discovering the film in college, describing it as a “splitting-the-atom moment.”

The connection between O’Brien and Reiner extended beyond friendship to professional collaboration. Reiner appeared as a guest on O’Brien’s “Late Night” show in 1999, and made subsequent appearances on O’Brien’s podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,” in 2023 and 2025.

The investigation into the Reiners’ deaths continues, with Nick Reiner currently facing murder charges. His arraignment was postponed in January after his initial legal counsel stepped down and was replaced by a public defender. Authorities allege that Nick Reiner fatally stabbed his parents at their Brentwood home in the early morning hours of December 14th. Their bodies were discovered later that day by their daughter, prompting Nick’s arrest in South Los Angeles.

Reports have surfaced detailing Nick Reiner’s long-standing struggles with mental health and substance use, factors that may potentially play a role in the legal proceedings. The case remains ongoing, and the full extent of these struggles and their impact on the events of December 14th remains to be seen.
