Actor Nicolas Cage announced his casting in the fifth season of HBO’s True Detective during an appearance at the New York Comic Con.

Nicolas Cage Confirms Casting During New York Comic Con Panel

During his appearance at the New York Comic Con, Cage discussed the physical demands of his film career and his need to slow down his movie output. As reported, the actor noted that he cannot manage making so many films back-to-back. While reflecting on his upcoming projects, Cage revealed his upcoming television role to the live audience. Creo que podría hacer una temporada de ‘True Detective‘. Está bien que sea el primero en anunciarlo, ¿verdad?

Despite the public disclosure, HBO had not issued an official casting confirmation at the time of the announcement.

Amazon Prime Video Relationship Ends Over Artificial Intelligence Disputes

The announcement regarding True Detective coincides with the actor’s public break with Amazon Prime Video over artificial intelligence policies. MUNDIARIO reported that Cage criticized the studio during the same New York Comic Con appearance for its financial ties to OpenAI. Cage stated that he refused to sign a release allowing the studio to utilize artificial intelligence to replicate his likeness or performance for the series Spider-Noir.

Amazon es una empresa muy favorable a la IA, hasta el punto de haber invertido 50 mil millones de dólares en OpenAI. Yo no soy un actor favorable a la IA, Cage told the audience, according to MUNDIARIO. The actor added that he likely will not work with the studio again following the cancellation of Spider-Noir after a single season, though he expressed a desire to collaborate instead with independent Gen Z filmmakers working outside major studio systems.

Franchise Production History and Prior Cast Comments

The potential addition of Cage to the fifth season follows a pattern of extended production gaps for the HBO franchise. Each season features independent, original storylines with distinct casts.

Prior to Cage’s announcement, original first-season star Matthew McConaughey expressed openness to returning to the franchise under specific conditions. As noted, McConaughey stated he would return only if presented with a script matching the quality of the initial season, while also commenting favorably on media rumors connecting Cage to the property by calling him a great actor suited for that dramatic world.
