Dublin, ireland – UFC superstar Conor McGregor has had his appeal against a sexual assault conviction unanimously rejected by three judges on the Court of Appeals. The ruling, delivered on Thursday, upheld the original decision on all grounds. The court also noted McGregor’s attempt to pay a friend to testify on his behalf and denied the friend reimbursement for legal costs.
Legal Setbacks for the Irish Fighter
The Court of Appeals’ decision marks a notable legal blow for McGregor. The judges found no merit in his appeal, reinforcing the initial verdict. This legal outcome comes as McGregor, once the prominent face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), has been teasing a potential comeback in the fighting world through social media posts.
Beyond the Octagon: Political Aspirations and controversies
Outside of his fighting career, McGregor has increasingly become a figure in Irish politics, aligning himself with far-right viewpoints. He has been vocal in his criticism of immigration policies and mainstream political figures. His public profile has also seen him visit the White House, meeting with President Trump in March. Furthermore, McGregor has publicly expressed his consideration of running for the largely ceremonial role of Irish President, a position currently held by the 84-year-old poet and human rights activist, Michael Higgins.
The Victim’s Perspective and Future Legal Challenges
The woman who brought the original case, referred to as Hand, was present in the Dublin courtroom for the appeals ruling. McGregor himself was not in attendance. Following the decision, Hand spoke to reporters, describing the proceedings as “retraumatizing” but expressing hope for healing and the ability to “move on.” She extended her gratitude to her legal team and a local rape crisis center for thier support.
Adding to his legal troubles, McGregor is also facing another sexual assault lawsuit in Florida. This case alleges an attack on a woman in 2023 within the bathroom of an NBA basketball arena.
