Controversy at Popular Jeju Island Restaurant Over Fatty Pork Belly – Full Details and Photos

A complaint was posted on the Internet that pork belly ordered at a popular meat restaurant on Jeju Island was full of fat, sparking controversy.

An article was recently published on the online community “Bobae Dream” titled “I’m so excited I can’t sleep”.

The author, who has been “living” on Jeju Island for a year, said he recently visited a popular steak restaurant in Seogwipo City on Jeju Island with his younger brother and ordered pork belly .

However, according to the author, the ordered pork belly worth 137,000 won was “more than 98% fat” and stated: “When I complained to the employee, the response was: ‘This is a lot of meat. ‘”

In response, the perpetrator said, “But that’s not the case,” so the employee cut up the meat, went to the kitchen, and brought the meat back, saying, “No problem.”

The author said, “I finally felt bad, so I only ate three pieces and left after paying 147,200 won, including alcohol,” and “I couldn’t sleep because I was so frustrated.”

At the same time, he also posted a photo of the pork belly and a receipt, saying: “Please look at the photo and calmly judge whether I am overreacting.”

The meat in the photo was mostly white and almost meatless.

“I swear most of the meat that came out looked like this,” the author said, adding, “I was stunned and speechless, so I just stared at the meat the staff had grilled.”

Netizens who saw the photo responded sympathetically, saying, “I was surprised to see the photo after wondering how long it was” and “It looks like it was used to clean a grill.”

However, in a phone call with MBC, the restaurant said: “The customer ordered two pieces of 1,200g bone-in pork belly and most of the meat provided was very lean.”

“The end of the meat attached to the bone contained some parts with many scaffolds, and the customer also checked the condition of the meat in advance.”

The restaurant explained: “We later received a complaint from the customer, but since the meat had already been put on the grill, it could not be changed. We instead provided two service menus.”

When the “Bigeopsal” controversy arose, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs distributed the “Pork Quality Control Manual” in January, recommending that pork belly in small packages be maintained at less than 1 cm and that of Ogyeopsal was maintained at a level below 1 cm. less than 1.5 cm.

In the manual, the government recommended removing or discarding areas with a lot of fat.
