As the climate crisis intensifies and the COP30 climate summit in Belém, Brazil, approaches, a unified voice is emerging.More than one hundred international organizations have presented the Belém Declaration, a coordinated appeal to UN Member States. The declaration urges the promotion of healthy, sustainable, and plant-based diets, incorporating animal ethics into the global food system.
The declaration was unveiled at the preparatory conference for COP30, recently held in Bonn, Germany, during the June climate change meetings.The initiative, endorsed by representatives from cities, regional authorities, and NGOs worldwide, aims to prioritize vegetable-rich diets on the international climate and health agendas. it seeks to safeguard the culinary traditions of the global south, which are frequently enough rich in vegetables, while addressing the excessive meat consumption prevalent in the global north.
Juliette Tronchon, head of UN affairs at ProVeg International, emphasized the declaration’s meaning. “We are very pleased to present this statement, which we hope will raise the profile of plant-rich diets at the upcoming COP30 Summit in November. Plant-based diets not only play a significant role in mitigating the climate crisis, but are also beneficial for human health, support food security, and can create large-scale employment opportunities.” She added the ethical imperative of ensuring the rights of animals, who are directly impacted by food industry practices.
