A police officer from the Special Operations Battalion (BOPE) of the Military Police was shot on Tuesday night (16) during an exchange of gunfire with drug dealers in the Mirantes de Periperi neighborhood, in Salvador. The information was confirmed by the Public Security Secretariat of the State of Bahia (SSP-BA).

The police officer was shot in the leg and taken to a health unit in the region. The health status is considered stable and not serious.

Policing actions have been reinforced in the region since last Saturday (13), according to the SSP. Until this Tuesday, the military captured five suspects and seized several items used by the criminals, such as rifles, pistols and ammunition. Also according to the SSP-BA, actions against the factions will continue to intensify in the neighborhood.

On Monday night (15) there was a confrontation between drug traffickers and criminals in the region. Teams from the 18th and 31st CIPMs, the Choque and Patamo Battalions, BOPE, CIPT/Rondesp BTS and Graer carried out a joint action, in the locations known as Baixada de Mirantes de Periperi and Campo do Bambu, but no arrests were made or seizures.

After five days of shootings and raids on abandoned houses by residents, the Red Command (CV) established itself in Mirantes de Periperi. The criminal organization, which participated in armed clashes against Bonde do Maluco (BDM), a faction that has historically dominated drug trafficking in the neighborhood, is present in Baixada de Mirantes, a location that is the epicenter of the conflict. The CV already transmits, via messaging application, ‘warnings’ to local residents.

Since last Wednesday (10), Fogo Cruzado, which georeferences the region as Colinas de Periperi, has recorded eight shootings, two dead and two injured. The fourth, in fact, marked the arrival of the CV at the location. The warning, for some of the residents, would be a sign that the faction had already dominated Mirantes, expelling BDM drug dealers from the neighborhood. Ostensible policing, however, still works with the information that the two groups are present and continue to conflict. This is what Major João Daniel Ribeiro, commander of the 18th Independent Military Police Company, responsible for the area, guarantees.

“We still believe that there is a conflict between two criminal groups. The area where we are operating [Baixada de Mirantes] This is exactly what the conflict between two groups is going on. This is because we are working to resolve this confrontation, regardless of the faction that is in the locality. Both groups establish themselves in the urban area, but use the vegetation for moments of escape,” he explains.

The tactic makes police action difficult, but did not prevent arrests on Sunday afternoon (14). The first, according to the PM, occurred in Baixada de Mirantes de Periperi after police officers located a group of armed men who, as the PM approached, fired firearms. After an exchange of gunfire, a suspect was found injured in the arm and was taken to Hospital do Subúrbio, where he received medical attention. A rifle and 89 portions of cocaine were found with him.

Still in Baixada, after the first confrontation, police officers from Batalhão Gêmeos found four suspects in a vehicle, which was stopped. During the action, security agents located a 9mm pistol with charger, a replica firearm, 9mm, 40 and 556 caliber ammunition, and camouflage clothing.
