Telehealth and Holistic Counseling: A New Era of Mental Health Support
The quarantine days of the pandemic forced the world to do more over the internet, including meetings, remote work, and telemedicine. While most people have returned to work, many internet conveniences have remained.
Joan Kaylor, a licensed professional counselor who resides in Washington, Pennsylvania, but spends her winters in Lake Placid, has embraced this shift. Through Zoom, she can treat her patients in both states. She uses Zoom because other applications, such as FaceTime, are not compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
Kaylor offers faith-based counseling, regardless of a person’s beliefs. She helps those with a myriad of issues, such as anxiety, depression, and body-focused repetitive behaviors, for example, hair pulling, that can lead to self-harm.
Kaylor also employs Chinese medicine with her clients and teaches the methods to other counselors. She said many people do not understand the methods at first.
“I guess it’s a new thing in Highlands County,” Kaylor said.
Other tools Kaylor uses include hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). She calls herself a “holistic therapist.”
“Neuro-linguistic programming interrupts patterns in the mind,” Kaylor said. “It helps with negative thoughts.”
Kaylor is not a fan of talk therapy alone. She said incorporating other facets to counseling is a better option. “I love helping people and I love helping them get unstuck,” Kaylor said.
Kaylor has spent the past three winters in Lake Placid and loves the area – especially not having to shovel snow. She considers living here a blessing. Kaylor knows people in the county have been through some trauma, especially after the last hurricane season.
Kaylor takes very few insurance assignments in Florida and does not take Medicare or medical assistance (Medicaid). She will give her patients a superbill they can send into their insurance carriers. For appointments and more information, email her at Joan@joankaylor.com.
The Rise of Telehealth
The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of telehealth services, making mental health support more accessible than ever. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, telehealth visits for mental health services increased by 154% between 2019 and 2020.
Telehealth has proven to be particularly beneficial for those in rural areas, where access to mental health services is often limited. For example, a study by the National Rural Health Association found that 60% of rural Americans live in areas with a shortage of mental health professionals. Telehealth bridges this gap, ensuring that patients in remote locations can receive the care they need.
Holistic Approaches to Mental Health
Holistic therapy, as practiced by Kaylor, integrates various therapeutic techniques to address the whole person. This approach recognizes that mental health is influenced by a combination of physical, emotional, and spiritual factors.
Chinese medicine, hypnosis, and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) are just a few of the tools Kaylor uses to help her clients. These methods are supported by growing bodies of research. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that acupuncture, a component of Chinese medicine, can effectively reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Addressing Potential Criticisms
While telehealth and holistic therapy offer many benefits, they are not without their criticisms. Some argue that telehealth lacks the personal touch of in-person sessions, which can be crucial for building trust and rapport. However, studies have shown that telehealth can be just as effective as in-person therapy for many conditions, including anxiety and depression.
Another concern is the effectiveness of holistic therapies. Skeptics may question the scientific validity of methods like NLP and hypnosis. However, numerous studies have demonstrated their efficacy in treating various mental health issues. For example, a meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology found that NLP can be an effective tool for managing anxiety and depression.
Future of Mental Health Support
The future of mental health support looks promising, with telehealth and holistic therapies playing a significant role. As technology continues to advance, we can expect even more innovative solutions to emerge, making mental health care more accessible and effective for everyone.
For those seeking mental health support, it is essential to explore all available options and find what works best for them. Whether it’s traditional talk therapy, holistic approaches, or a combination of both, the key is to prioritize mental health and seek help when needed.
