A unique Approach to Policing

As spring, the inter-municipal police force of Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has been utilizing an electric van distinguished by its vibrant floral decorations. This vehicle isn’t intended for traditional police interventions; rather,it serves as a mobile platform for fostering dialog and building rapport with residents.

The van’s distinctive “baba-cool” aesthetic, reminiscent of the hippie era, immediately captures attention. Passersby have noted its welcoming appearance, with one individual commenting on its ability to elicit smiles, as reported during a segment on the local program, Colors Locales.

Adapting to a New Image

Sergeant GrĂ©gory Praplan acknowledged that officers initially needed time to adjust to the van’s unconventional look. However, positive public response during patrols quickly affirmed the initiative’s effectiveness. The choice to employ a Volkswagen Combi, a vehicle strongly associated with the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s, deliberately contrasts with traditional perceptions of law enforcement.

Praplan admitted that the van sparked discussion during a recent police training course, highlighting the inherent tension between a traditionally opaque police environment and a desire for greater community accessibility.

Building Trust Through Interaction

Commander Yves Sauvain emphasized that the primary goal of the flowery van is to encourage interaction.”This breaks down the image of the stern police officer that people hesitate to approach,” sauvain stated. “Even children are drawn to discuss the bus, which is incredibly valuable.”

By embracing a spirit of openness and approachability, the Crans-Montana police aim to soften their public image and cultivate a stronger bond of trust with the community. the initiative represents a bold experiment in blending unconventional aesthetics with the core principles of community policing.
