A child apparently died in a fire in a refugee home in Thuringia on Sunday. The cause of the fire is unclear.

A child died in a fire in a refugee accommodation in Apolda, Thuringia, on Sunday morning. The MDR reports this with reference to Apolda’s mayor Rüdiger Eisenbrand. Eight people were injured in the fire.

According to information from the broadcaster, the fire broke out around 5 a.m. on Sunday morning. Part of the building was therefore briefly on fire. Around 250 people had to be evacuated, they are said to have been brought to safety in the gym of a neighboring school. An emergency chaplain is on site.

It is still unclear why the fire broke out. As the MDR reports, the criminal police have started the investigation. The building is no longer habitable.
