Lucknow: Legal experts have lashed out at the UP government for confronting bulldozers with guns as protests against the implementation of ‘bulldozer justice’ in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh are pending in the courts. Former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Govind Mathur has termed the demolition of the houses of the accused as illegal construction shortly after the detention of one of the accused as unconstitutional and a grave violation of the law. Javed Ahmed, who was arrested in connection with the clashes in Prayag Raj in Uttar Pradesh, has come under fire after authorities demolished his house.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and others had criticized the UP government for challenging the Indian Constitution and the law on which the Yogi government was going about such activities. Legal experts also point out that the government, which is responsible for maintaining law and order, cannot justify self-punishment by looking at the courts and the law.

The Prayagraj Development Authority (JDA) on Sunday demolished the house of Javed Ahmed following the demolition of two houses in Saharanpur on Saturday. Javed Ahmed is the father of Welfare Party leader and activist Afrin Fatima. The house was demolished on charges of illegal construction. The family was given notice to vacate the house on Friday. Authorities also claim that a show cause notice was issued in May.

Civil rights activists point out that despite the action being taken in the name of pushing into the road, all the nearby structures are still being pushed into the road and at a glance it is clear that this is retaliation against those who are raising their voices against it.

But UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that no culprit will be spared and the bulldozer action will continue. Yogi Adityanath came to power for the second time in UP, declaring that he would bulldoze the empire of those who encroach on or destroy public property or business ventures. The BJP had described Yogi as a ‘bulldozer Baba’ in the Assembly elections. Leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have praised Yogi Adityanath’s bulldozer rule.
