Doha: Dahl Al Mizfir Cave (Sink Hole) in south-west Qatar, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Dr. Falih Bin Nasser Bin Ahmad Bin Ali Al Thani established the Dahl Al Misfir Sinkhole, known as one of the most important eco-tourism destinations in the country, and will be opened to the public after the completion of detailed geological research studies on the joint with the Qatar Museum. This is also the first research of its kind in the area.

Dahl Al Misfir Cave is located at a depth of 35 meters in the south of the Rawdat Rashid area, 40 km from Doha. Although the exact age of the cave is not known, based on the fossils found, the researchers estimate that the period of formation of the cave could be younger than the rocks surrounding the cave, which are estimated to have formed around 40 to 50 million years ago.

Visitors are only allowed to enter the cave during daylight hours following security measures. The Ministry and ExxonMobil have been collaborating on various initiatives and projects, including research projects to protect sea cows known as dugongs in Qatar. Exxon Mobil’s research team in collaboration with the ministry spent about six months investigating the cave.

3D graphics of the cave have also been designed so that visitors can access it using a QR code on an informative banner placed near the cave The team relies heavily on lidar technology, ground surveys and mapping techniques to obtain accurate measurements of the cave and create detailed displays that include 360-degree panoramic images of its interior features.
