Lee Guk-jong, head of the military’s Daejeon Hospital, led an emergency surgery unit and participated in joint defense training in the northwestern islands to protect the “golden moment” to save soldiers injured in an emergency.

On the 10th, the Marine Corps announced that Director Lee personally participated in training, unusual for a military hospital director, to verify mission execution procedures and the effectiveness of the Forward Deployment Surgical Team (FST ) of the Daejeon Armed Forces Hospital. He led the entire on-site training process, from transportation of emergency trauma patients to treatment.

The FST is an organization created on a trial basis by Director Lee after taking office as director of the Daejeon Armed Forces Hospital to provide timely treatment to trauma patients in front-line areas. The FST’s mission is to dispatch to the operational area, set up an operating room within 90 minutes, and increase the survival rate of wounded soldiers through emergency surgery.

In particular, in the northwestern island region, there is a high possibility that large or small landing operations will be carried out in a crisis situation, so it is inevitable that there will be a large number of battle casualties in the early stages of the war . For this reason, the role of mobile emergency surgery units such as the FST introduced by Director Lee is even more important. Director Lee, the top authority in the field of major trauma in Korea, has actively applied the experience he has accumulated in the private sector to improve the military medical system.

He said: “The main purpose of this training is to master the procedures to organically combine medical forces on the ground and in the air so that it can be the last bastion for the flagship forces protecting the land and territorial waters of the Republic of Korea”. .” The importance of a support system was highlighted.

In 2013, while serving as head of the trauma center in the southern Gyeonggi region, Director Lee established a medical support cooperation system with the Marine Corps, which understood the importance of the ability to quickly respond to emergency patients during the bombing of Yeonpyeong Island. .

In 2019, even though a strong wind and wind warning was in effect on Yeonpyeong Island and passenger ships were stranded, a “medical helicopter” was launched and joint training was conducted with the Corps’ Yeonpyeong unit of the Marines, assuming a situation in which a patient with a serious trauma occurred. He became a hot topic at the time when he said, “If our Marines are injured by an enemy provocation in the Northwest Islands, I will leave everything aside and run immediately.”

Meanwhile, the Northwest Island Defense Command conducted joint defense training in the first half of the year to prepare for enemy provocations, with the participation of the Army, Navy and Air Force for three days from 8 to Today.

The training was conducted assuming an accidental collision situation that could occur in the area. In this exercise, military authorities also conducted live-fire training by deploying tanks from the 6th Marine Corps Brigade and the Yeonpyeong Unit, a “Cheonho” wheeled anti-aircraft gun, 81.60 mm mortars and Vulcan artillery.
