In response to the devastating natural disasters, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi took to social media to declare that he will be refraining from participating in some of the dates of the LDP presidential election, for which he is a candidate, in order to focus on disaster response.
An online debate was held among the candidates on the evening of the 21st, where Minister Lim was the only one of the nine candidates to send a video message. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi was initially scheduled to appear live on a television debate program on the 22nd but has since canceled his appearance.
Deputy Chairman of the Policy Research Council Tamura, who represents Hayashi’s endorsers and serves as campaign manager, will attend the television debate program in his place. Additionally, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi’s planned tour of Tokyo has also been canceled.
On the 21st, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi concluded his tour of Tokyo as a candidate for the LDP presidential election and entered the Prime Minister’s Office. Following a report on the damage situation, he stated, “We will work closely with the affected local governments and do our utmost to grasp information on the damage and to implement emergency disaster measures.”
