Museum Folkwang features a significant collection of 19th- and 20th-century art in Essen. This museum started in 1922 through a merger. The merger combined the Essener Kunstmuseum, established in 1906, and the Folkwang Museum, founded by collector Karl Ernst Osthaus in 1902 in Hagen.
