MuskS DOGE: Government Efficiency or Disastrous Cuts?

Elon Musk’s brief tenure in the Trump administration, marked⁢ by his government-slashing project, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), continues to reverberate in Washington. Despite Musk’s departure, DOGE remains, having eliminated roughly 260,000 ‍federal employee jobs and ‌reduced funding for scientific research and⁤ humanitarian aid during his⁣ 130 days.

DOGE claims to have saved the government $180 billion, falling short of its $2 trillion target. Reports⁣ indicate the federal government is attempting to rehire workers who left or were laid off.

Elaine Kamarck, ‌a senior fellow at the⁤ Brookings Institution, suggests DOGE’s tactics ‍may prove disastrous.‍ “DOGE‍ came in with ⁢these huge cuts,⁢ which were not attached to a plan,” Kamarck told Today, Explained.

Kamarck, who ran the Clinton administration’s reinventing Government program, assessed Musk’s record at DOGE, questioning the impact of his efforts at cutting government spending.

“He will not have totally, radically reshaped ⁣the federal government,” Kamarck said. She⁢ added that musk “did manage to do was⁣ insert chaos, fear, and loathing into the federal workforce.”

Kamarck⁣ noted ‍that ⁤courts have reversed some ⁤DOGE decisions. As cabinet officers get confirmed, they are reassessing the cuts. “now that their Cabinet secretary’s home, what’s happening is they’re looking at these‍ cuts and they’re saying, ‘No, no, no! We can’t live with these cuts becuase we have a mission to do.'”

The government may struggle to rehire ⁢fired employees, Kamarck said, because “they ⁤treated‌ them like dirt, ⁢and they’ve said a lot of insulting things.” She added that manny federal employees possess high skills and can find jobs elsewhere. This could cause “real lasting damage to the government.”

DOGE employees are now embedded within government organizations, reporting to cabinet secretaries.Kamarck pointed out that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has already ‍clashed with musk and⁤ may not be receptive to DOGE’s advice. ”So from now on, DOGE is going to have ‍to⁢ work hand in hand with Donald Trump’s appointed leaders,” Kamarck said.

kamarck ‌believes the current fight over wasteful spending is “worse than normal” as the deficit impacts are larger. She dismissed the idea that deficits can be addressed solely by cutting waste, fraud, and abuse. “That is pure nonsense,” she stated.

She explained that moast government money goes to programs like‌ Social Security, Medicare, and veterans’‌ benefits. Kamarck lamented the lack of discussion‌ about entitlement reform, such as raising the retirement age, due to the polarized political environment.
