musk Allies Reportedly Scale Back Government Efficiency Work
Updated May 29, 2025
Nicole Hollander, a key figure in Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is reportedly reducing her involvement with the General Services Management (GSA). Hollander has been working on real estate projects related to federal leases and office buildings.
This shift aligns with a reported wind-down of Musk’s leadership team at DOGE. Musk stated on X that his time as a Special Government Employee was nearing its end, expressing gratitude to President Trump for the possibility to cut wasteful spending. He also mentioned dedicating only a couple of days per week to government affairs during a Tesla shareholders call.
Steve Davis, another longtime Musk associate, is also reportedly departing DOGE, according to the Wall Street Journal. Davis has been instrumental in Musk’s government operations, overseeing budget cuts and hiring practices. He is also Hollander’s partner.
Both Davis and Hollander played significant roles in Musk’s Twitter takeover in 2022, implementing cost-cutting measures that drastically reduced the company’s real estate footprint and employee base.
Their tenure in government has coincided with a reduction in the federal workforce. The GSA has been preparing to sell hundreds of federal office buildings. On May 29, the GSA announced it was accelerating the sale or transfer of the Captain John F. Williams Coast Guard building, the United States Coast Guard’s New England headquarters, indicating that the push for government efficiency and real estate disposition is ongoing.
GSA employees indicate that no official declaration has been made regarding Davis and Hollander. Edward Coristine, also known as “Big Balls,” appears to be continuing his government work.
What’s next
The long-term impact of these personnel changes on the GSA’s real estate strategy and the broader federal workforce remains to be seen as the agency continues its efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs.
