Thom Browne

Palazzina Appiani, milan,April 2024

Thom Browne is renowned for subverting traditional design norms and re-creating the modern cultural context by using themes such as stark beauty, repetitive narratives, and exploring the search for individuality in mediocrity. His oppositional visions come to life in surrealistic ways, drawing inspiration from public art such as the Bauhaus concept of the “total work of art” and fairy tales such as Cinderella. Thom Browne’s previous works of art include performance art and handmade sculptures Structure and proportion are key elements in his fashion practice.

browne chose the palazzina appiani, a representation of neoclassical simplicity, an unlikely place for a nap, as the location of the special performance “…while sleeping…” to appear for the first time at the milan furniture fair. A conversation will follow as six simple medieval beds are displayed in the great hall. The bed is placed in the center of the hall and is made of fine cotton sateen bedding customized by Thom Browne in collaboration with Frette. The details are decorated with Thom Browne’s iconic four-stripe pattern. Six models wearing pajamas walked into the empty room, but when they walked to their respective beds, they didn’t lie down instead, they started changing for their dream jobs and wearing Thom Browne’s iconic gray outfits. When the gray suits are on, they are also ready to enter the land of dreams, where the sounds of sleep and lullabies will accompany them on their journey.

While the model sleeps, there is a strange but synchronic harmony between this daily napping activity and the spatial environment built in the Napoleonic era. The visual effect of the performance and this installation is intended to stimulate the audience’s thinking about the role of clothing in public life.

Consistent with the theme of the aesthetics of repetition, “…dreamtime…” refers to browne’s previous performance art, such as his 2009 debut at the Immagine Pitti Uomo Museum in Florence, which featured 40 identical desks and clerks in typing in sync across Europe. Thom Browne’s designs have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Design Basel Miami.

Thom Browne partners with Frette to launch a home collection

Keeping with the passion for an elegant lifestyle, Thom Browne is honored to team up with frette to launch a new home range. With a brand history of 160 years, frette has carefully selected materials, paid attention to detail and artisan craftsmanship to create a comfortable home life for its old traditional textile technology and its crafts are highly praised by Thom Browne. The range includes bedding, bath towels, nightgowns and other products, and can be purchased on the official Thom Browne platform and selected stores starting from April 16.

This series of quilt covers and sheets are made from white cotton sateen, following the unique craftsmanship of frette (started in 1903), which enhances the softness of the bedding while giving it a subtle glossy texture. The bedding range is equipped with custom labels and gray four-stripe embroidery to pay homage to the Thom Browne brand logo. The pattern is embroidered in ivory on gray wool rugs, throws and decorative cushions.

Bathroom amenities include a set of towels, washcloths, bath towels and a quilted bath mat printed with the classic Four Stripes. The bathrobe is made of light gray cotton velvet dyed with yarn. Its silhouette is inspired by the brand’s classic trench coat. The matching pajamas are made from pure cashmere and feature Four Stripes on the edges. As well as home goods, the collection also includes a white sports cloth with red, blue and white grosgrain and a white beach bag with four gray stripes, both made from soft terry cotton.

As an inventive extension of Thom Browne’s home furniture series, the series debuted on April 16 in a special show at the Salone del Mobile in Milan at the Palazzina Appiani exhibition hall.
