Drip Irrigation Saves Harvest for Dutch Farmer Willem Smits
Groningen Farmer Finds Success with Drip Irrigation, Combating Soil Crusting
Groningen, Netherlands - willem Smits, a third-generation farmer in Groningen, Netherlands, faced a persistent challenge: soil crusting. This phenomenon, caused by heavy rainfall followed by dry spells, creates a hard layer on the soil surface, hindering crop emergence and impacting yields.
Determined to find a solution, Smits, who cultivates 140 hectares of land with his parents, growing crops like onions, turned to drip irrigation technology from Netafim.
“The advantage is that once the system is installed and connected, it requires minimal maintenance during the growing season,” Smits explains. ”Simply turning on the pump is enough; the system takes care of the rest.”
The results were remarkable.Drip irrigation allowed smits to maintain moisture levels in the soil, preventing the formation of a hard crust after heavy rainfall. This led to improved crop emergence and healthier plant growth. The difference was stark when comparing sections with and without drip irrigation.
“We tested areas without the irrigation lines and saw a significantly lower yield, up to 30% less,” Smits reveals. “Drip irrigation saved our harvest in 2023.”
Beyond the tangible benefits, Smits values the support and expertise provided by Netafim’s field team. Specialists like André van Spengen and Willem Botha actively collaborate with him on system design and implementation, regularly visiting the farm to discuss optimization strategies.
For smits, precision irrigation offers not only a practical solution but also peace of mind. “Drip irrigation means yield security,” he says. “especially in a challenging year, it ensures a prosperous harvest.”

Dutch Farmer Fights Soil Crusting with Drip Irrigation, Seeing Up to 30% Yield Increase
Groningen, Netherlands – Willem Smits, a third-generation farmer in Groningen, is tackling a persistent problem: soil crusting. This phenomenon, triggered by heavy rains followed by dry spells, forms a hard layer on the soil surface that hinders crop emergence and reduces yields.
Determined to overcome this challenge, Smits, who farms 140 hectares of onions with his parents, turned to Netafim’s drip irrigation technology.
“The beauty of the system is its simplicity,” Smits explains. ”Once installed, it requires minimal upkeep during the growing season. Turning on the pump is all it takes; the system handles the rest.”
The impact has been notable. Drip irrigation effectively maintains soil moisture levels, preventing crust formation even after heavy rainfall. This has led to improved crop emergence and robust plant growth. Smits observed a stark contrast between sections equipped with drip irrigation and those without.
“We compared areas with and without irrigation lines, and the difference in yield was up to 30%,” Smits reveals. “Drip irrigation was a lifesaver for our 2023 harvest.”
Smits appreciates the ongoing support and expertise provided by Netafim’s field team. Specialists Andre van Spengen and Willem Botha work closely with him, collaborating on system design, implementation, and optimization strategies through regular farm visits.
For Smits, drip irrigation offers more than just a practical solution; it provides peace of mind. “Drip irrigation means yield security,” he says. “Especially in a year with challenging conditions, it ensures a accomplished harvest.”
