EU Urges Israel to Accept Hezbollah Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions

EU Urges Israel to Accept Hezbollah Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions

EU Calls for Israel to Accept Ceasefire with Hezbollah

Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, stated that there are “no excuses” for Israel to reject a ceasefire with Hezbollah. He emphasized that all of Israel’s security concerns have been addressed in a deal brokered by the U.S. and France. Borrell urged increased pressure on Israel to help moderate any extreme views within its government.

The Israeli security cabinet was set to meet to discuss the ceasefire proposal. One unresolved issue is Israel’s demand to retain the right to act if Hezbollah breaches the agreement.

Under the proposed deal, the U.S. will lead a ceasefire implementation committee, with France’s participation at Lebanon’s request. Borrell warned that failure to implement a ceasefire could lead to the collapse of Lebanon.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated following the October 2023 Hamas attacks in Israel. Israel’s military actions have resulted in over 3,500 deaths in Lebanon and around 15,000 injuries, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. In Israel, about 90 soldiers and nearly 50 civilians have died due to the conflict.

During the G7 meeting in Italy, foreign ministers, including those from Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE, discussed the ongoing wars in the Middle East. Borrell proposed that the UN Security Council demand humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, stating that assistance has been blocked.

Borrell also addressed the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, calling for adherence to international law. He remarked that the ICC should be respected, as it ensures justice.

The G7 discussed responses to the ICC warrants, but there was no consensus due to differing views, particularly from the U.S. Italy, while supportive of Israel, recognized the need to respect international law.

As the meeting shifted focus to Ukraine on Tuesday, foreign ministers expressed solidarity with Kyiv amid ongoing Russian attacks. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to its allies and ongoing support for Ukraine.
