Evolution of Apple’s iPhone Camera Designs: From Horizontal to Vertical, and What’s Next?

Apple’s Evolution of iPhone Camera Design

Since the release of the iPhone X, Apple has undergone significant changes in the design of its camera modules. The transition began with the incorporation of two vertical cameras in the iPhone X, deviating from the original use of two horizontal cameras in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8. This vertical design persisted until the iPhone 12, with the Pro model featuring three cameras. The iPhone 13 then introduced a diagonal or oblique camera design, which was further adopted in subsequent regular iPhone models, including the current iPhone 15.

Rumored Shift in iPhone 16 Camera Design

Recent reports have emerged suggesting a potential return to a vertical camera design in the upcoming iPhone 16. This prospective shift may mark a departure from the diagonal design seen in the iPhone 13 and its successors. While the design of the iPhone has remained relatively unchanged since the iPhone 11, this rumored shift indicates that Apple may be considering a departure from its established camera module designs.

As the smartphone landscape continues to evolve, one noticeable trend is the increasing size of camera modules across various brands. This growth is attributed to the demand for enhanced camera specifications in modern smartphones.

Since the iPhone X, Apple has adapted the camera design to two vertical cameras. From the original use of 2 horizontal cameras in iPhone 7 – iPhone 8 and continued to use a vertical design until iPhone 12 (the Pro model has 3 cameras) and changed to a diagonal or oblique design in iPhone 13

Regular iPhone models that are not Pro models have used a diagonal camera design from the iPhone 13 until the current iPhone 15, but recently there is news that Apple will return to using a vertical camera design again in the iPhone 16, as shown in the image below. Actually, probably. With the iPhone 12.

The design of the iPhone has not changed significantly since the iPhone 11. Five years later, Apple has maintained this design to this day. And there likely won’t be any design changes anytime soon.

But when it comes to the design of today’s smartphones, they are quite the end. What we can clearly see is that the camera modules of each brand are getting bigger and bigger because of the full camera specifications.
