Ex-College Swimmer Legend Storer Charged With Murder of Hawaii Security Guard

Legend Storer, a 20-year-old former collegiate swimmer, has been charged with second-degree murder following the Aug. 7 death of 63-year-old security guard Michael Dyer at the Sands of Kahana resort in Maui, according to reports from Hawaii News Now and the New York Post.

Storer, a former student-athlete at Concordia University Irvine who later transferred to the University of Hawaii, allegedly bludgeoned Dyer to death with a five-gallon water bottle during an overnight attack, the New York Post reported. Court records viewed by the New York Post show Storer faces additional charges of burglary with a dangerous instrument and indecent exposure.

During a court appearance on Friday, Storer pleaded not guilty to the charges. District Court Judge Christopher Dunn denied bail, stating he could not find a combination of conditions that would ensure the safety of the community or the appearance of the defendant, according to court records.

Details of the Aug. 7 Attack

Surveillance footage captured Storer, who was naked at the time, approaching the security guard’s office at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 7, according to Hawaii News Now. Michael Dyer was on his lunch break in the office when Storer broke in and launched the attack, the New York Post reported.

A coworker of the victim, Bell Hill, told the New York Post that Dyer was in his office eating a cheeseburger during his break when the incident occurred. Police discovered Dyer’s unresponsive body at approximately 5:30 a.m. after receiving a call at the resort; he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the New York Post.

Storer escaped the condo complex following the melee. Approximately two hours later, officers responded to reports of a naked man wandering a nearby neighborhood, where they apprehended Storer. He was found covered in abrasions and taken to a hospital for evaluation, the New York Post reported.

Local residents reported hearing unusual shouting during the night. Gina Lombardi told the New York Post she heard a man screaming phrases such as "Jesus loves you. Jesus is me. I am Jesus" roughly 15 times.

Storer’s Athletic Background and Legal Stakes

Storer was a decorated swimmer and a two-time Maui Interscholastic champion while attending Maui Prep, according to his athlete biography. He spent one year at Concordia University Irvine in California before transferring to the University of Hawaii, the New York Post reported.

The legal consequences for Storer may be amplified by a 2021 Hawaiian law. According to Hawaii News Now, this legislation increased penalties for crimes committed against kupuna, which refers to seniors aged 60 or older.

Storer is currently being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center, according to court records.
