Three carabinieri died and 13 soldiers and police officers were injured in an explosion that occurred in a farmhouse in castel D’Azzano, in the province of Verona. A man and a woman aged around 60, brothers, were stopped by the police, while a third family member is still wanted in the area.
What Happened: The Explosion and Immediate Aftermath
According to initial facts, the police forces had intervened to evacuate the house, inside which ther were three people, when the explosion occurred. The entire two-storey farmhouse collapsed, overwhelming the soldiers and agents. The firefighters were also present on site and intervened immediately, but there was little they could do to save those caught in the blast. Among the occupants, a woman was injured.
The house is entirely destroyed and was engulfed in flames, the extinguishing of which occupied dozens of firefighters. Numerous vehicles of the Urgency and Medical Emergency Service (Suem) were operating. The intervention of the health workers was timely as some were already on site to support the police for the eviction. One of the dead carabinieri was pulled from the rubble.
The Cause: Gas Saturation and a Planned Eviction
The house was saturated with gas,and the explosion was triggered when the front door was opened, hitting the police and firefighters who were breaking in. Sources close to the investigators indicate the eviction had been planned for days after various attempts to evict three siblings, in their sixties, from the property. These attempts had previously failed due to threats to blow themselves up. Consequently, carabinieri from the Special Units and Uopi agents, specialized in anti-terrorism action, were deployed to the scene, recognizing the inherent danger of the intervention.
The three siblings barricaded themselves in the house. After several attempts to persuade them to leave, police initiated a forced entry: some climbed onto the roof to lower themselves into the building from above, while others approached the entrance. Upon reaching the door, a strong smell of gas was detected, almost certainly released from one or more cylinders. When the front door was opened, a powerful explosion occurred, injuring three carabinieri, policemen, and firefighters. Three soldiers died, and over a dozen others were injured, some trapped under the rubble. The house was immediately engulfed in flames, while rescue efforts began, supported by medical personnel and ambulances. The injured woman was located, while the two brothers initially attempted to escape; one was arrested, and the second fled across the fields.
