Indonesian football is facing renewed scrutiny over player conduct following a controversial incident in the Elite Pro Academy (EPA) U-20 competition, where Fadly Alberto, a highly touted prospect from the Indonesia U-17 World Cup squad, was involved in an alleged dangerous kick to an opponent’s neck during a match between Dewa United and Bhayangkara FC.

The incident, which occurred during the EPA U-20 fixture, quickly gained attention after video clips circulated online showing what appeared to be a high, swinging kick — dubbed by some media as a “kung fu kick” — directed at the head and neck area of a Bhayangkara FC player. The clip sparked widespread debate on social media, with critics condemning the action as reckless and dangerous, while others questioned the context and intent behind the challenge.

Fadly Alberto, who gained national recognition for his performances at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2023 and was expected to be a key figure in Indonesia’s youth development pipeline, has since become the subject of disciplinary review. According to reports from Bolasport.com, PSSI (Football Association of Indonesia) officials, including Nova Arianto, a member of the youth technical committee, confirmed that the case remains under investigation and that no final decision has been made regarding potential sanctions.

“The case involving Fadly Alberto is still being discussed,” Nova Arianto was quoted as saying. “It has not been cleared from the national team setup, nor has any formal sanction been imposed yet. We are reviewing all available evidence, including match footage and referee reports, before reaching a conclusion.”

The EPA U-20 league, designed as a developmental platform for Indonesia’s most promising young talents, has emphasized player safety and discipline as core principles. Incidents involving dangerous play are treated seriously, particularly when they involve contact to the head or neck, which could result in suspension or other disciplinary measures under PSSI’s code of conduct.

Fadly Alberto’s involvement has drawn particular attention due to his rising profile. After standout performances in the U-17 World Cup, where he showcased technical ability and composure beyond his years, he was widely regarded as one of Indonesia’s most promising attacking talents. His inclusion in youth national team camps and exposure to high-level training environments have made him a focal point in discussions about the country’s football future.

However, the recent incident has cast a shadow over his development trajectory. Coaches and officials have stressed the importance of emotional control and adherence to fair play, especially for players on the verge of breaking into senior levels. Firman Utina, a former national team goalkeeper and current commentator, criticized the challenge during a televised analysis, urging coaches to address such behavior early in a player’s career.

“Players like Fadly have immense talent, but talent must be matched with discipline,” Utina reportedly said. “Actions that endanger opponents have no place in the game, regardless of intent. It’s the responsibility of coaches and academies to instill respect and control from the ground up.”

The Bhayangkara FC U-20 side, which fields players linked to the Indonesian National Police sports program, has not issued an official public statement regarding the incident. However, internal sources suggest the club is cooperating with the EPA organizers and PSSI in the review process.

Meanwhile, Dewa United, the club Alberto represents at the youth level, has acknowledged the incident but declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation. The club, which has invested heavily in its youth academy and partnerships with elite training programs, said it supports due process and will abide by any ruling from the governing bodies.

As of now, Fadly Alberto remains eligible to participate in EPA U-20 matches unless and until a formal suspension is handed down. His availability for upcoming Indonesia U-20 national team activities also remains uncertain, pending the outcome of the PSSI review. No timeline has been provided for when a decision might be expected.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by young athletes navigating the pressures of elite development, where technical excellence must be balanced with professionalism and emotional maturity. For Indonesian football, which continues to invest in youth infrastructure and international exposure, moments like this serve as both a test of its disciplinary systems and an opportunity to reinforce the values it seeks to promote in the next generation of players.
