Fair Trade Commission investigates allegations of violating the Galaxy S22 ‘GOS’ labeling and advertising law

The Fair Trade Commission has launched a full-fledged investigation into allegations of violations of the Labeling and Advertising Act that Samsung Electronics failed to inform consumers of the performance limiting features of its smartphone ‘Galaxy S22’.

The Fair Trade Commission recently received a report from the Seoul office that Samsung Electronics installed the ‘Game Optimization Service’ (GOS) function on its smartphone but did not properly notify it.

Reported cases are usually received and handled by the FTC regional offices, but in this case, it seems that the FTC headquarters decided to investigate the case in consideration of the impact on consumers.

The Fair Trade Commission plans to examine whether Samsung Electronics has displayed or advertised in a way that may affect consumers’ purchase choices, such as not properly disclosing the relevant information.

Previously, when Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy S22 series, unlike previous smartphones, Samsung Electronics made it mandatory to install ‘GOS’ and prevented it from being deleted even with a detour, such as a paid app.

GOS plays a role in preventing overheating by artificially lowering the performance of the mobile phone, such as lowering the screen resolution when playing games.

In response, Samsung apologized for the controversy and said that an update would allow GOS to be turned off when playing games, while also disabling a feature that blocks external apps that can bypass it.
