(Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Do-yeon = The Associated Press reported on the 9th (local time) that nine people died and dozens were taken to hospitals after eating sea turtle meat in Zanzibar, an autonomous territory in Tanzania, Africa .
According to reports, local authorities said that among residents who ate sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, eight children and one adult died and 78 were hospitalized.
One adult who died was the mother of one of the children who died, and autopsy results confirmed that all of the deceased had eaten sea turtle meat.
According to the authorities, residents were eating sea turtle meat on the 5th.
Zanzibar authorities sent a disaster management team to the scene and warned residents not to eat sea turtles. Turtle meat is considered a delicacy in Zanzibar, but it can cause food poisoning known as coelotoxicity, from which deaths occur regularly.
Although the reason for the food poisoning has not been revealed in detail, it is believed to be the algae that the turtles eat.
In particular, this food poisoning is known to be fatal to children and the elderly.
In November 2021, seven people, including a 3-year-old child, died on Pemba Island after eating turtle meat.
