Fatima Sana Shaikh Discusses Financial Pressure And Limited Roles

Fatima Sana Shaikh stated in an interview that financial pressure and a scarcity of opportunities often force actors to accept roles they may not genuinely want to play.

Hum log koi ameer ghar se to hain nahi (We are not from rich families),

Fatima told the publication, adding that actors frequently have to compromise and select the best available option from limited choices.

The actor noted that career momentum depends heavily on the commercial performance of recent projects. According to Fatima, a successful film or show can secure ten subsequent offers, whereas a failure narrows an actor’s options significantly. She addressed the gap between wanting to experiment with diverse material and the economic realities of filmmaking.

However much you romanticise and want to do different kinds of things, you are not putting in the money. You aren’t the producer. You need the money,

she said.

Limited Opportunities for Complex Female Characters

Fatima also highlighted systemic challenges for women in the industry, stating that roles with genuine depth remain difficult to secure. She argued that male actors receive greater latitude to explore their full potential, while female characters are frequently restricted to narrow archetypes.

Fatima said. She added that female characters displaying moral ambiguity are often relegated to regressive tropes.

Unfortunately, when women are shown to be grey, you are a vixen or a chudail. We are still stuck in that vamp stereotype. I hope that it changes because you can have a wonderful woman character who is also confused. But we haven’t even reached there. Hopefully, we’ll get there soon,
