Fentanyl and Spice Mix: 40 Overdoses in 24 Hours Dunking Lives at Hospital
Prison Drug Overdose Incident
Almost 40 inmates at Deerbolt prison in Co Durham collapsed within 24 hours after taking drugs. This incident involved a potent mix of fentanyl and spice, affecting more than ten percent of the prison’s population. One inmate required hospitalization.
In response to the situation, prison officials placed Deerbolt on a two-day lockdown. The lockdown followed alarming reports of inmates collapsing, starting with one found in his cell. Paramedics rushed the inmate to the hospital, where he was saved just in time. Authorities prepared “death in custody” paperwork due to the seriousness of his condition.
Sources indicate that word spread among the inmates about the dangerous drug mixture, leading to numerous cases of collapse over several hours. A total of 38 inmates experienced severe reactions, prompting rapid medical response. Many received treatment within the prison using an antidote for overdoses, emphasizing the need for such supplies.
A recent inspection report revealed that over a quarter of the young inmates at Deerbolt struggle with substance abuse issues. The Prison Service stated that the government is committed to addressing the ongoing drug challenges within the prison system.
This incident highlights urgent concerns regarding drug use in correctional facilities, underscoring the pressing need for effective solutions.
