Fight against terrorism: When operation Koundjouaré saves lives

President Faure Gnassingbé, speaking to elements of the Togolese armed forces in northern Togo

Togo, like several countries in the sub-region, has been facing terrorist attacks since November 2021.

The fight against these outlaws is a national priority for Togo and the government continues to find solutions to prevent and counter the threats. The integrity of the territory is therefore preserved, even if there is a loss of human life.

The Togolese Head of State Faure Gnassingbé recently recognized in Abuja (Nigeria), during a high-level meeting on the fight against terrorism in Africa, that there is a need for better financing of combat actions, solid cooperation military between States and an ardent desire to put an end to the scourge.

He insisted on the need to facilitate international financing of control actions and to strengthen military cooperation between States with specific contexts.

“Terrorism threatens the very substance of our States. This is why ultimately defeating terrorism is our only option. My conviction to defeat terrorism in the sub-region cannot be achieved without effective inter-state cooperation. And we must be able to achieve military victories in a context of protean threats and asymmetric conflict,” Faure Gnassingbé said.

Defeat terrorism in the sub-region

“Evil threatens the very substance of our States (…) My conviction to defeat terrorism in the sub-region cannot be achieved without effective inter-state cooperation,” he insisted.

“And we must be able to achieve military victories in a context of protean threats and asymmetric conflict. Without neglecting the impact of the initiatives taken to rally our populations to maintain the rule of law and ensure them improved living conditions. It seems to me that it is through a reformed organization that we can defeat terrorism,” the Togolese president indicated to his peers.

The Koundjouaré operation

In Togo, a military operation called Koundjouaré is a system put in place since September 2018 and which serves as an anti-terrorist shield between Togo and the Sahel countries.

It is part of the battery of military, social and economic measures deployed.

In the north of the country, this operation helps combat the terrorist threat and strengthen security by preventing the activities of terrorist groups or extremist elements.

It involves the deployment of security forces, intelligence efforts, patrols in sensitive areas, measures to strengthen regional and international cooperation. Operation Koundjouaré demonstrates the executive’s commitment to protecting its citizens and ensuring stability and security in the country.

The PURS also

The Emergency Program for the Savanes Region (PURS), launched at the beginning of 2022 for the benefit of the Savanes region, quickly proved effective.

It was quickly extended to other regions of the country. It involves strengthening people’s access to basic services to counter terrorism: electricity network, access to drinking water and electricity, support for agricultural activity, etc. It makes areas less vulnerable. In one year, 50 billion CFA francs were committed to its implementation. FIN
