St. Mary’s University graduate student Filipe Bastos has been named the Lone Star Conference (LSC) Defensive Player of the Week. The recognition follows the Rattlers’ successful start to conference play, where the team secured a 2-0 record.
Defensive Impact and Versatility
Bastos, a transfer from Bryant and a native of Santa Maria de Faria, Portugal, played a critical role in the St. Mary’s defense throughout the two-match stretch. The Rattlers allowed only one goal during the week, securing a 4-1 victory against Lubbock Christian and a 1-0 road win over Sul Ross State.
According to team reports, Bastos demonstrated versatility by playing three distinct defensive positions across the two matches. His contribution extended beyond the backline, as he also recorded an assist on the game-tying goal in the 11th minute against Lubbock Christian.
Recent St. Mary’s Conference Honors
The selection of Bastos marks the third time a St. Mary’s player has received a weekly honor from the Lone Star Conference this season. He joins teammates Lewis Boney, who earned Defensive Player of the Week recognition on September 14, and Eduardo Fernandez, who was named Offensive Player of the Week on the same date.

St. Mary’s University is scheduled to host St. Edward’s in a match dubbed the “Battle of the Saints” on Saturday at 7 p.m. The men’s soccer game is part of a doubleheader event on campus. The St. Mary’s volleyball team will also be in action that day, facing Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2 p.m.
