The Health and Environment Research Institute is urging the public to familiarize themselves with the preventive measures for dengue fever before traveling abroad. It is crucial to take strict precautions to avoid mosquito bites, as these insects are known carriers of the dengue virus.

Dengue fever is an infectious disease characterized by symptoms like fever, chills, headache, and muscle pain. These symptoms typically appear after an incubation period of 3 to 14 days following exposure to the dengue virus. Unfortunately, there is currently no vaccine or treatment available to prevent dengue fever.

No Presence of Dengue-Carrying Mosquitoes in Jeju

Notably, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is a known transmitter of dengue fever, has not been found in Jeju province. Furthermore, there have been no reports of the dengue virus in the Aedes aegyptiformis mosquito population residing in Jeju.

However, it is crucial to stay vigilant, as approximately 5% of dengue fever patients can progress to severe dengue infection, such as dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. If left untreated, these severe cases can result in a 20% mortality rate.

Rise in Dengue Fever Cases Globally and in Korea

Globally, the incidence of dengue fever has seen a significant increase, with reported cases surpassing 2 million this year. Tragically, 974 fatalities have been reported due to dengue fever worldwide.

In South Korea, the number of dengue fever cases has risen by 3.7 times compared to the same period last year. As of July 29, 2019, a total of 83 cases have been reported.
